Seeking passenger recommendations for Settle Carlisle Railway Traxplorer App
The Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company is looking for passenger recommendations for places to visit along the iconic line, to share on their free, digital app, Traxplorer.
Launched last year, the app has proved popular with passengers travelling along the line, providing information about stations, places to visit and eat.
And one of Traxplorer’s top users, school student Kai Ellison, is helping to expand the information on the app, with the help of those who travel on the line.
The youngest volunteer with the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, Kai, 13 is top of the leaderboard in the additional games included on Traxplorer.
Kai said: “I really enjoy using Traxplorer every time I travel on the Settle Carlisle line, and it is exciting to be involved in developing it.”
Passengers can send in their favourite place to visit along the 72 miles of line from Settle to Carlisle. And everyone who supplies a Passenger Recommendation from now until September 1, 2026 will go into a draw to win a Settle Carlisle goodie bag.
Voted one of the most scenic train journeys in Europe by Lonely Planet travel publishers, the line is popular throughout the year with national and international visitors. The line has also received the TripAdvisor top 10 places to visit in the world award, and in its 150th year of providing a passenger services it is set to carry a million people.
Karen Morley-Chesworth, Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company Community Rail officer, said: “Traxplorer is a travel app that makes train journeys more fun and informative by providing information about what people can see through the window of the train, as well as providing live train times, historical information about lines, and user-friendly station guides – all onscreen in real time. Now we are extending this with our new Passenger Recommendations.
“We are asking our passengers to share with everyone their favourite places to visit, eat and drink along the line, to provide more support for local businesses and enhance people’s visits.
“And we are also including more information about onward journeys from the line, which includes bus routes and connections to Morecambe on the Bentham line, Scotland and the North East from Carlisle and York, Manchester, Birmingham and London from Leeds.”
“Passengers can log on at any point along the line, collect digital postcards for each station visited, as well as take part in quests and games. ”
The upgrade of the Settle Carlisle Traxplorer App has been funded by Northern, Community Rail Network and CrossCountry.

The latest development goes even further, showing how the CRP is truly connecting the railway to the community. It will encourage rail passengers to not just ‘ride the line’, but also to stop off and explore local towns, use connecting bus links, visit independent businesses and stay longer in the area to boost the local economy. –
