The first train travelled over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct along the 73-mile line in August 1875, carrying goods.

The railway was saved from closure in the 1980s. Today the Settle Carlisle line has been named the best scenic railway route in Europe by travel publisher Lonely Planet. The line continues to carry passengers and freight providing a service between Carlisle and Leeds.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company works in partnership with the rail industry, local businesses, community groups and organisations, including the Friends of Settle Carlisle Line and Settle Carlisle Trust to promote and encourage social and economic benefits for communities along the world-renowned line.

There are many volunteering opportunities for residents and business people to get involved in supporting the line, which is both a commuter service and a tourist route.

Chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, Pete Myres said: “The Settle Carlisle line has a very special place in people’s hearts. It is an iconic line, with the most beautiful scenery and history. There are many opportunities for people to get involved, and volunteers are most welcome, from supporting our community projects to becoming a board member.

“This is a special year, with Rail 200 celebrating 200 years of passenger trail worldwide, and the Settle Carlisle line marking its 150th anniversary. It is an exciting time to be part of the rail industry.

“As well as volunteering, we also provide employment for local people, including opportunities to join our refreshment trolley service.”
