First class demand on the Steam train departing City of Culture
Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company are running the steam charter train, The Border City Express, on Saturday, 4th October to mark three special events - Bradford’s year as City of Culture, Rail 200 celebrating 200 years of passenger rail and the Settle Carlisle line’s 150th anniversary of freight services.
The Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company has confirmed that Battle of Britain Class 34067 Tangmere is booked as the steam locomotive for this charter, from West Coast Railways’ pool of heritage engines. Now, they are adding an additional first-class carriage to meet the demand.
Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company Deputy Chairman, John Moorhouse, said: “We are delighted that so many people want to travel on our line by steam – and have the added luxury experience of enjoying the journey out and dinner on the return trip in a heritage First Class carriage.
“We have been able to arrange for the additional carriage, which means those on our waiting list will have the First Class experience, and there will also be a few more seats available for those wanting to book now.
“We are delighted that so many people want to share in this unique triple celebration, which recognises Bradford’s railway heritage and culture, as well as our own 150th anniversary of the line opening to freight and 200
years of passenger rail services, which started in the North of England, and have help shape transport and travel across the world.
“The Border City Express will also provide an opportunity for our passengers to explore the historic, border city of Carlisle, including Carlisle Castle, the Cathedral and Tullie House Museum before returning to the train back along the Settle Carlisle line, taking in the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct.”
The Settle Carlisle line has been named one of the most scenic in Europe by Lonely Planet travel publishers. The line goes through in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian Lakeland countryside.
The Border City Express has Premier Dining and Standard Class carriages as well as First Class.
