The Staycation Express – 19th July to 9th September 2021

The Staycation Express returns to the Settle and Carlisle railway this summer with a new, luxury offering.  From the 19th July to the 9th September, The Staycation Express operates between Skipton, Settle, Appleby, and- new to this year- Carlisle.

The charter service runs alongside the railway’s daily service, operated by Northern, to provide additional capacity on the Settle-Carlisle railway during the peak summer season.  

The Staycation Express offers you and your loved ones the opportunity to experience one of the UK’s most historic and scenic rail journeys aboard a socially distanced, First-Class service. 


The Ultimate Staycation

Whether you’re heading to the region for a day out, staying for a long break or perhaps you’re a local wishing to reconnect with the regions stunning scenery; this year’s timetabled tourist service provides passengers with the perfect opportunity to explore Settle and Carlisle country this summer.

This year, guests can travel in style and comfort aboard a newly refurbished 5-coach InterCity 125 complete with leather reclining First-Class seating, COVID secure Perspex screens, private tables, large pictorial windows, and power-points.

New to 2021, Rail Charter Services will provide an enhanced catering buffet-counter.  An on-board guide will also be available to provide a limited commentary as the train passes the many points of interest that punctuate the rail line.

From the Yorkshire Dales’ spectacular scenery, to breath taking heights from the top of the Ribblehead Viaduct and the awe-inspiring remote fells of Westmorland; make new memories this summer on this unforgettable staycation.

Tickets & Times

The Staycation Express will operate twice daily between Monday and Thursday, and on Saturdays and Sundays.  The timetabled charter train service tempts passengers with services running between Skipton and Settle in the Yorkshire Dales to Appleby-in-Westmorland and the historic roman city Carlisle in Cumbria.

Please note, the Staycation Express will not operate on Fridays.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway CRP are delighted to announce the N7a Travel Guide for the 2021 summer staycation season!  Our new special timetable booklet promotes both the daily Northern service and ‘The Staycation Express charter train by Rail Charter Services.

Printed copies of the N7a timetable are available from select stations and tourist information centres along the rail line.  The N7a is also available digitally, meaning you can access it ‘on-the-go’ from a smart device.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company are delighted to be providing a telephone booking service for The Staycation Express.

Tickets for The Staycation Express must be pre-booked.  National Rail tickets are not accepted on this service.

A Socially Distanced Rail Journey

All services will have stringent social distancing measures in place to ensure the best safety for both customers and staff on board.  With online pre-booking, individual seating areas divided by Perspex screens, and a socially divided one-way boarding and alighting system; passengers will feel at ease throughout the entirety of their journey.

Prior to boarding, passengers will receive all the necessary guidance for their trip via email.  A specialist first-class compartment in a separate carriage will be available should a passenger become unwell during the journey and need to self-isolate.
