The news has been announced that Arriva Trains will run services from April 2016. We await exact details of how this will affect the Settle–Carlisle and Skipton–Lancaster/Morecambe routes but the early signs are very positive. Investment totalling £1 billion will mean 281 new carriages, additional services, improved station facilities, ticketing and Wi-Fi for the north’s railways.

For the Settle–Carlisle line:

An additional service will be provided in each direction.

Two departures from Leeds between 1600 and 1900 in place of one today, addressing an important priority for users of the Settle & Carlisle line.

Two extra services on Sundays in each direction from 2017.

For the Skipton–Lancaster line:

Seven trains per day in each direction between Leeds and Lancaster, up from four trains westbound and five trains eastbound today.

Earlier/later arrivals and departures to/from Leeds-Lancaster.

Lancaster will similarly have an arrival between 0800 and 0900, and a departure between 1700 and 1759.

Sundays will increase to five trains per day from four.

In addition to this the Aire Valley line from Skipton will receive new electric trains, additional seating capacity and extra services too, which will improve connections. We look forward to meeting the new operator to work on the detail and see how we can add value to their plans for the region.
