The Settle-Carlisle Railway Trust was established after the proposal to close the line had been defeated in 1989. Its aim is to conserve the historic architecture and structures along the line. It meets at least quarterly and has charitable status. It has already redeveloped the stations at Ribblehead into a Settle-Carlisle Railway Visitor Centre and at Horton-in-Ribblesdale where there are offices and a room for community use, and at Kirkby Stephen where there are several offices and a Midland Railway Room which will house an exhibition about the company which built the line.
